The new Allied Health Building, Glacier Hall, is a new experiential learning environment/teaching facility focused on health care programs. It includes vocational labs for Nursing, Medical Assisting, Respiratory Care and Dental Assisting, as well as tiered lecture halls, computer lab and faculty offices. The centerpiece of the building is the Human Patient Simulation Center. This center allows students to learn important skills through the use of simulation mannequins; and then review their own efforts via an advanced Audio Visual System.
The design of the skills labs in the building is based on actual medical and dental environments. This comes down to the details such as functioning medical headwalls, and handwashing sinks at each station. The Human Patient Simulation Center is based on the design of a hospital ICU. Wireless mannequins simulate real patients. This allows the student to gain detailed emulated experience prior to walking into an actual hospital room. After their session, the student is able to review their recorded performance in the privacy of a debriefing room.
The lecture halls are equipped with advanced audio visual systems as well. Students in the back rows are able to view the teachers’ demonstrations up close with the use of cameras and LCD screens. Further, the cameras are visible from the satellite program at Columbia College in Sonora.
Glacier Hall’s siting and form complete the campus frontage, define a public plaza, and create a pedestrian thoroughfare, opening the campus core to the Modesto community. The Human Patient Simulation Center is an experiential learning environment designed for use not only by the College’s Students but for community hospitals as well.
The building is a recipient of the Saving By Design program. This is achieved greatly through the use of high efficiency Mechanical Systems. The centerpiece of this system is a co-designed Central Plant. Additionally, high efficiency fans and variable frequency drives contribute greatly to long term energy savings. However, also includes high efficiency fans and variable frequency drives. Water saving features are also employed including sensor faucets, low flow toilets and irrigation systems.
