The mission of the new Mt. SAC Child Development Center is to “create a welcoming and exemplary facility that supports the combined educational and child development functions housed inside and enhances their ability to provide quality and safe instruction and services.”

The Mt. SAC Child Development Center is designed as a multi-building village which sits along the hillside site in order to provide the residential scale and engaging environment that the College is seeking. The four buildings house the Child-care Administration and Food Service, Instructional and Program Administration, and classrooms and support facilities for Infants, Toddlers and Pre‚ÄźSchoolers. The individual play yards and covered patios are provided for each group of students. Play areas are designed as outdoor classrooms integrated with the sloping site and flowing into the adjacent Demonstration Classrooms. The play yards use materials indigenous to the area highlighted with water, plant, and rock features. Adventure, creative, quiet, and private play areas are planned within each developmentally appropriate play yard. The buildings are designed with an emphasis on natural daylighting and nontoxic, organic materials. Light monitors and shaped ceilings bring daylight into the core of the demonstration and credit classrooms. A warm, natural color palette supported by a variety of natural materials and textures enforces the connection between the buildings and the site. Ultimately, the design reinforces the goal of a natural, collaborative, residential scale environment that meets all current state child care licensing requirements and looks toward the future generation of Child Development Centers.
