The Student Services Center is a key project in the transformation of an aging campus. The highly inclusive design process has led to a paradigm shift in the delivery of student services from the traditional model of separate departments to an integrated model of combined services. The images show how the project has changed the face of the campus from an anonymous institution to an open door to learning.
The building is a gateway to Student Services and Student Activities, and serves as a circulation magnet. Students, faculty, staff and visitors are drawn through the building along a mall of activities to matriculation functions, bookstore, food services, student government, clubs and activities. New life has been given to valuable existing facilities, and the non-functional elevated plaza has been replaced with usable space. Student Services Center is now the heart of campus activity. Zoning was carefully laid out in order to cluster similar functions and activity levels, and to accommodate a variety of hours of operation. The design of the building flows seamlessly from the interior to the exterior, connecting formal and informal gathering spaces. Covered breezeways and functional adjacencies provide a continuous link between the new and renovated spaces. The Student Services Center is used by every member of the campus community for daily activities, and it is a popular venue for special occasions. The new facility is already the familiar image of the Cypress College to the public.
