Fremont Elementary School Replacement Building’s 20 classroom environment is designed to facilitate flexible teaching spaces that support various teaching and learning styles both inside and out. The classroom spaces are outfitted with teaching walls that contain storage and large group instructional media and unique furniture that can be organized in a multitude of ways to augment the healthy learning environment. Outdoor spaces have also been designed to support student learning. Laura’s Garden is a unique personalized area (dedicated to a student who lost her life to health issues) which is directly accessible from each of the ground level classrooms and provides a series of trellised cloistered spaces that encourage students to linger and read or study while passively allowing students to learn about the thirst for knowledge that Laura had. The building’s architectural style is reminiscent of the 1950’s original campus which captures amazing views to the adjacent mountains while being responsive to the southern California climate. Winner of a Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce community enhancement award, the project “fits” the campus and has inspired pride in the community.
