The former library at Southwestern College was transformed into the new Student Services Center. Working closely with college administrators, tBP/Architecture programmed and designed the Center that centralized all student services functions to provide easy access to students. The project “breaks down the barriers” between the departments and creates an open, welcoming atmosphere to support the success of their students.
The new Student Services Center maintains the strong architectural elements of the existing library – the massive concrete column structure and the horizontal lintel with the carved mayan glyphs. The exterior walls between the columns werereplaced with a transparent window system to accommodate the new users of the building. A new lobby for the building, facing the Student Center, introduces and welcomes new and continuing students to a centralized hub of services. A central commons, with an information desk and open computer stations, is at the building entrance, and provides immediate access to student services information. The commons is a well-lit two-story volume with views to all of the services and departments that are available to students.
