March 9, 2015 – “Schools of the Future”, an ambitious program sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, will provide prototypes for K-12 schools across the country. Planned to reflect the educational mission of the Ministry of Education, tBP/Architecture and Al Zaid Engineering Consultants have teamed together to provide prototypical designs for schools that will be constructed in dense urban locations in Riyadh, Makkah and Jeddah. Located typically on 1.5 acre sites, the Primary, Intermediate and Secondary schools will be 3 levels and organized with flexible classroom clusters. The building program and layout reflect the commitment the Ministry’s commitment to advance teaching pedagogies to focus on technology-supported educational delivery. The classroom organization will facilitate both individual and group educational discovery.
Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest consumer of energy per capita. A concerted effort has been undertaken to create energy-efficient school facilities that maximize natural light while shading every window from the harsh Arabian sun. The building system is a precast concrete exterior skin over a concrete structure to provide thermal mass and lessen cooling needs. Exterior envelope systems have been regularized and standardized to satisfy short construction durations.
