The College of the Redwood campus found that they were riddled with earthquake faults and required replacement of the Creative Arts building. The state-funded replacement building is located in a fault-clear zone and is considered a “drop and replace” project, meaning the demolition of the existing art building is included in the scope.
Designing within the uniquely shaped safe building zone defined by the California Geological Surveys presented the opportunity to create a triangular complex which surrounds a central quad. Features such as an outdoor stage, art display areas, and a transparent art museum visible from the main campus are envisioned to spur student interaction and creativity. Metal roofs with deep overhangs as well as covered walkways function to shelter students from the rain and creates comfortable spaces for outdoor tables and chairs. Wood siding and an abundance of windows are characteristic of the college campus and maintains cohesiveness for the new building.
