COLLEGE VIEW SCHOOL

This Special Needs School is run by Glendale Unified School District and is located right across the street from Glendale Community College. Serving three school districts, Glendale, Burbank, and La Cañada it is solely dedicated for students 3 years to 22 years in age with extreme special needs.

The floor plan integrates 3 programmatic functions: The school for children with special needs called College View (CV), the Middle College High School (MCHS), and the Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) which serves CV students as well as students from the region. Care has been taken to support the self-reliance of students with special needs (especially sight and cognitive disabilities) by inventing a unique way-finding trail using color, texture, and super graphics. The trail also incorporates a Velcro path upon which teachers can place “rewards” to encourage students to navigate by themselves and claim their “rewards”. The MCHS is located on the second floor and is organized around a Cybrarium and lounge area as well as a large balcony facing the College so that learning can happen anytime, anyplace, anywhere. The MTU is designed with a separate secure entrance identified as a unique entity.
