CRESCENTA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Science Lab Modernization
This renovation brings the science department from two separate buildings into one for collaboration of all science activities. To enact Glendale USD’s vision of STEM instruction, tBP/Architecture worked with CVHS’s teachers to program and enact a modernization of the failing 1950’s, 3-story science building. The modernization consisted of creating right-sized labs by demolishing all the walls and finishes to better support the needs of Chemistry, Biology, and Physics classes. The result is a newly envisioned building with specialty labs and classrooms that facilitate interdisciplinary learning. The original labs were plagued by noisy HVAC closet units, delaminating casework, and failing lab infrastructure (no water, no data, few electrical outlets, but plenty of gas) so the modernization included new HVAC, new ceilings, lighting, flooring, lab casework and new lab services (gas, air, water, electricity, data).
