ORANGE COAST COLLEGE Literature & Languages/Social & Behavioral Sciences Building

Technology-rich, yet interpersonal. Transparent, while maintaining areas for privacy. These were the some of the concepts tBP/Architecture struck a balance between for the new Literature and Languages Social and Behavioral Science (LLSS) Building. Classrooms, computer labs, and interdisciplinary labs are located on the first two floors of the building for ease of student access, while faculty offices are housed on the third floor.

A pedestrian bridge on the second story will help circulate nearly 75% of the student body who will attend classes in the LLSS building and the neighboring Mathematics Business & Computing Center.

The building’s segmented design creates zones for each discipline housed within and are distinguished by a color scheme. Unique elements cater to disciplines such as the ‘Pit Labs’ for Speech instruction and student rehearsals and an outdoor “dig” courtyard for anthropology students’ hands-on learning. Linking the different areas are ‘sticky spaces’ created by comfortable seating strategically placed along hallways and lobbies where students can collaborate with peers or instructors without adding to the building’s assignable square footage (ASF). The outdoor courtyard is another distinguishing feature that seeks to create a feeling of transcendence by surrounding students in glazing, offering a peak into the various instruction occurring inside.
