tBP/Architecture was asked by the Santa Monica Malibu USD to participate in and facilitate a facility assessment and to arrive at recommended new projects to enhance student success at the Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH) located within John Muir Elementary School. This document will serve as a roadmap to guide future development and includes existing and new school programs including site projects, building modernization projects and new construction projects. This inclusive effort solicited input from both SMASH and Muir Elementary School’s administrators, teachers, staff, parents and the community as well as District Administrators and Facilities, Maintenance & Operations staff. The final project list preserves and enhances the school’s unique identity and celebrates its’ culture while achieving parity with other District facilities.
Projects include: A two-story Administrative and Maker Space, Art/Science Building, new campus parking and student drop off area, a renovation of the Library/Media Center, modernization of all classroom clusters to support a Project-based Curriculum, enhance outdoor learning courts, renovate the Multi-purpose building into a music building and create a new building to house an MPR, Fitness, Special Needs, Science/Art, Pre-school, Daycare, Culinary Arts labs and an outdoor covered dining area. These projects will be a leap into the future, while breathing new life into an aging facility.
